Well, i did promise that I was going to go on a rant - so here goes.... i beware, i have not slept much and it makes almost no sense. As well as being repetitive and a bit confused. (edit:very confused)
Well, i can't remember what sparked it - in fact i think it was ms. prentice and educating rita. irregardless....
I was just thinking about the songs of innocence and experience and how they're lies because neither is anything innocent and nor is it experienced. and then that lead me on to getting annoyed at Blake because all the poems from the songs of innocence and experience have almost exactly the same message. It's like he couldn't think of anything else to write about. And then i realised that it is exactly that. Blake was trying to prove that there is no such thing as innocence - nor is there anything like experience. And yes, he couldn't think of anything else to write about because he had to pay the bills like everyone else. And he liked that idea and he went with it which is what i do and what everybody else does as well. And then i confused myself more by realising that Blake might not have meant for the poems to have been analysed so much. Maybe they were just little poems. But then again - everything suffers from attentional fallacy.
I decided that I needed to be angry at some well known and generally accepted figure that did not have Spears in her last name so I started getting het up about how roses aren't innocent really because otherwise they wouldn't be red to attract birds and bees and wouldn't have thorns. And then i started debating about what was innocent. And against my wishes i did actually get young babies (newborn) even though i hate that particular cliche. and i also got sand. I mean, if anything is innocent, sand is.
And then I had a big dilemma because I love Blake but I had just spent a really long time listing all the reasons he bugged me. And then I just ended up thinking of some more. The fact that all poets are famous because the right person read them in the right place at the right time and they got caught in the public eye. But then i started thinking about fate and whether it was all really due to fate. i don't believe in fate i don't think. I mean they're like mugs and knivings and stuff. Occasionally one will get platered over the front cover of the TImes just because the parents of that person had the right connections (much like Anna Popplewell) and there was not much other news on at the time. And another day the same thing will happen except it'll happen to someone in Ipswich and it'll happen during the General Elections or the Iraq War and the family won't have any connections so no one will hear about it. No one will superficially shake their head and sigh about what a shame it is that the Youth Of Today are so disturbed. And David Beckham won't make a public appeal on their behalf.
And then an argument FOR shakespeare came into my head - 'it was good for the time it was written.' And then for a shining millisecond i thought 'yeah, that's it! they must have liked it because the humour in shakespeare is probably the sort of humour that people in the early 1600s liked.' But that just got me wound up about the fact that Shakespeare is still considered such an amazing man for 'everything that he gave to literature.' When all he really gave was What People Wanted To Read. Just like what JKRowling and Anthony Horowitz give is What People Want To Read. (Yes, it did kill me to write that....) Does that mean that JKR and AH are going to be heavily and critically analysed some day for the greatness they gave to literature? They might do, there's no way of knowing. But they'll never be quite in the same league as shakespeare because shakespeare was in the right place at the right time. He 'influenced' the age of literature *rolls eyes*. The classics are studied because they are classics. People have forgotten the reasons why they were classics. It's like the google page thing. Things go to the top of the page just because they were the first page made on that topic by someone who could be bothered to make it in to a full website. And then even though more are made, people still click on that one because it is the one on top. And then it gets lots of hits so it stays at the top where people continue to click on it.
And then i went down to starbucks and ordered a grande mocha frappucino with cream and not too much milk and i realised that maybe salome is right - maybe there isn't much point in heated debates.
Except i know that there is.
